All WiSe Operators are being asked to look out for tagged basking sharks this summer. After a successful pilot project last year, researchers in Ireland have tagged over 100 animals so far this year, and the first re-sighting of a tagged shark has just been made off the Isle of Muck in the west of Scotland by WiSe Operator Ronnie Dyer of the M/V Shearwater out of Arisaig.

The tags are red (West Cork), white (Kerry) and Yellow (Donegal) and are numbered to help (see photo) identify the animal and where and when it was tagged. Reports of sighted animals will help to establish migration patterns for the basking shark.

If you sight a tagged shark, please report it to , or if you would like to know more visit their website at
