The Portland Maritime Centre houses a museum with themed
displays including immigration, whaling, shipwrecks,
rescue, navigation, tools, underwater exploration and
much more. "Skeletonia" the Sperm Whale skeleton
is the centrepiece of the museum.
The whale was washed up on Narrawong Beach in 1987 where
it was buried. The remains where exhumed in 1999, and
cleaned up for reconstruction in our Centre.
The skeleton has proven popular amongst all visitors.
Now you can ALWAYS see a whale in Portland! The Visitor
Information Centre is located within the entry foyer
of the Maritime Discovery Centre. We provide details
on attractions in the local & regional area, encouraging
visitors to take time to explore. The Visitor Information
Center is Accredited level 1 and provides maps, accommodation
& attraction details for local, state wide &
interstate destinations. A seated area is provided for
visitors to relax & view several videos on attractions
in the area.

Our specialist RIB, T2 was designed for Weymouth-Whitewater
and is waiting to take you on the ride of your life.
We will take you on a fantastic 1.5 hour ride off the
spectacular coast of Portland to have the greatest white
knuckle ride in Dorset! This is NOT for the faint-hearted,
on this trip you will see the world famous tidal races
off Portland and tear across the waves of countless
shipwrecks! Of course if this sounds a little fast for
you then why not try one of our two quieter rides, these
are suitable for 5s and over. See some of the
ruggedness of an Island steeped in history and industry,
the caves and coves of smuggling times of the past or
see the spectacular scenery and wildlife of Weymouth
Bay, then ride across to the cliffs of Durdle Door,
Lulworth Cove and beyond. However you want to spend
your time on the water we will do our best to ensure
you have an adventure of a lifetime!

Durlston Marine Project is a community based marine
research and education programme, based at Durlston
Country Park, near Swanage. It focuses on the Durlston
Marine Research Area a voluntary marine nature
reserve that extends 25 km along the Purbeck coastline
from St Albans Head to South Haven Point. The project
specialises in the innovative, non-intrusive interpretation
of the underwater world and its wildlife and has pioneered
the use of remote cameras and underwater microphones
to study the important seabird colonies along the cliffs,
and the semi-resident pod of bottlenose dolphins that
visit the local waters. Community walks, talks, displays,
leaflets and a programme of special events for the general
public and other groups complement these studies.
